Born on October 13, 1948 in Odessa. He graduated from the medical faculty of the Odessa medical Institute (1972), graduate school at the Department of radiology (1975). Since 1975 assistant, since 1977-associate Professor of the same Department. He began his career under the guidance of Professor E. D. Dubovoy. Since 1978 he worked in the Central Clinical Hospital IV of the Main Department of the Ministry of health of the USSR as a senior physician. In the same year – head of the Department. It was the first computed tomography Department in the country. At that time, the prevailing opinion was that the CT technique is necessary only for the study of the brain, and to study the pathology of internal organs is unacceptable. S. K. Ternovoy plunged into the work on the study and implementation of computed tomography in clinical practice. No literature did not exist. Everything had to start from scratch. Created and tested research methods of the different bodies, to develop training options patients. The indicators of normal anatomy and the basis of semiotics of various diseases were determined. Serious scientific work began, including at the international level. Doctors A. T. Nikitin, I. S. Vlasova, N.M. Lepikhin defended his first dissertations on various aspects of the method in 1980. In 1979, S. K. Ternovoy together with the staff of the Institute of biomedical problems of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR and NASA began to develop a method of quantitative densitometry to study the processes of bone loss in astronauts on long-term orbital flights. Unique data were obtained and published in 1980, and the phantom for bone densitometry is now an integral part of modern tomography. In 1983 Sergey Konstantinovich together with Yu.N. Belenkov for the first time in the country began work on the creation of domestic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the first clinical laboratory of MRI (1984-head of the laboratory Yu.N. Belenkov) at the Institute of cardiology began work on the study of clinical possibilities of the method. In 1990, S. K. Ternovoy headed this laboratory, transformed into the Department of tomography. For a series of works conducted under the direction of A.I. Vorobyov, in 1987 was awarded the state prize of the USSR. For the cycle of works "Radiation diagnosis of socially significant diseases" he was awarded the prize of the Government of the Russian Federation (2011). In 2011, S. K. Ternovoy was elected a full member of the Russian Academy of medical Sciences, since 2014 – a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2014, Sergei Konstantinovich was awarded the honorary title "Honored worker of science of the Russian Federation" (presidential Decree №680 of October 25, 2014). S. K. Ternovoy since 1996 head of the Department of radiation diagnosis, radiation therapy of the First Moscow state medical University. I. M. Sechenov.
The total number of publications 405 in the database of Russian science citation index, Hirsch index 16 . Under the leadership of Academician S. K. Ternovoy 17 candidate and 12 doctoral theses were defended. Sergey Konstantinovich Ternovoy is the editor-in-chief of the Russian electronic journal on radiology REJR, the President of the journal "radiology diagnostics and therapy", the first Deputy editor-in-chief of the "Journal of radiology and nuclear medicine".
Research interests: radiology, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound diagnostics, angiography, telemedicine, development of new teaching methods at the pre - and post-graduate level.
