Andrei I. Holodny

Chief of the Neuroradiology Service and Director of the Functional MRI Laboratory in the Department of Radiology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Professor of Radiology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

Professor Holodny graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Biophysics and with a medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He was a resident in Radiology, chief resident and fellow in Neuroradiology at the New York University Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in Experimental Radiology from the University of Oslo. He is American Board or Radiology certified in Radiology with an Added Qualification in Neuroradiology.

Professor Holodny is the Founding President of the American Society of Functional Neuroradiology (ASFNR) and the Founding Chairman of the Functional MRI Task Force Committee of the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR). He is also the Past-President of the Eastern Neuroradiological Society, 2006 – 2007. He is an Editorial Board member of the American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR), 2004-present. He reviews for over 20 journals and has served on 6 NIH Study Sessions.

Dr. Holodny holds an Honorary Doctorate (honoris causa) from the Russian Academy of Medical Science and is an Honorary Member (honoris causa) of the Minsk Theological Academy. He is a winner of the Stephen A. Kieffer Award of the Eastern Neuroradiological Society in 2006 and 2008 and the Norman Leeds Award in 2011. He is a Senior Fellow of the Sophia Institute, December and a Fellow of the John Jay Society of Columbia University.

Dr. Holodny is author of 100 peer-reviewed publications and two books. He has over 130 presentations at scientific meetings and over 100 invited lectures including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell and Cambridge Universities, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) and the American Society of Functional Neuroradiology (ASFNR). He has also been an invited speaker in Europe, Russia and China.

As Chief of the Neuroradiology Service, Dr. Holodny oversees the clinical imaging as well as research studies of the brain, spine, and neck at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The functional MRI (fMRI) laboratory provides pre-operative planning for patients with brain tumors. The laboratory employs fMRI and another technique called diffusion MRI to identify important areas of the brain, such as those that control language or motor function, in patients with brain tumors. The ability to identify these vital areas before and during surgery allows a neurosurgeon or radiation therapist to operate on or treat only the tumor, thereby avoiding surrounding brain tissue that is critical for important functions such as speech and movement.
