Bagrat Alekyan was born on 15.04.1951 in Yerevan, Armenia.

In 1974 he graduated from the medical faculty of Yerevan state medical Institute. Since 1975 he has been working at the scientific center of cardiovascular surgery. A. N. After Bakulev Russian Academy Of Medical Sciences. During the years of work has passed all stages of the career: started as a senior laboratory assistant (1975-1976), then was a Junior researcher (1976-1980), senior researcher (1980 – 1991), chief researcher (1991-1992). In 1980 he defended his thesis on "Coronary bed, hemodynamics and contractile function of myocardium in patients with coronary heart disease with postinfarction cardiosclerosis in the aspect of surgical treatment", and in 1986 – doctoral thesis "Modern aspects of diagnosis of complete transposition of major vessels according to x-ray studies".

Since 1992 Bagrat Alekyan has been approved as the head of the Department of x-ray surgical methods of research and treatment of heart and vascular diseases. Over the years of his leadership, the Department has grown into a large x-ray endovascular center of the country, increased staff, significantly increased the number of x-ray endovascular diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Bagrat Alekyan is a pioneer in the development of many special techniques in endovascular surgery. For the first time in Russia he performed a number of x-ray endovascular operations: closure of the open arterial duct using gianturco spirals, special mechanical occluders Amplatzer and Sideris, closure of atrial and interventricular septal defects by means of occluders and a number of other x-ray endovascular interventions for complex congenital heart diseases in newborns and infants.  Thanks to the activity of Bagrat Alekyan in pediatric practice was introduced stenting of blood vessels in congenital heart disease, which allowed to successfully operate on patients previously considered inoperable. For the first time in the country, he also performed stenting of the internal carotid artery in patients with chronic cerebral vascular insufficiency and stenting of the left coronary artery in patients with coronary artery disease.

For the first time in the world in young patients Bagrat Alekyan performed operations to close the defect of the aorto-pulmonary septum, fistula between the aorta and the right ventricle, as well as pathological communication between the pulmonary artery and the left atrium with a special device.

The fruitful scientific and medical research of Bagrat Alekyan is reflected in the published ten Russian and two foreign monographs, a large number of scientific works (more than 700). He trained 7 doctors and 40 candidates of medical Sciences.

From 2002 to the present time Bagrat Alekyan is the Chairman of The Russian scientific society of specialists in x-ray endovascular diagnosis and treatment. He is also Chairman of the problem Commission on endovascular surgery of the Scientific Council of the Ministry of health and social development of the Russian Federation and the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, a member of the Editorial Board of the journal "Asian cardiovascular and Thoracic annals", "Journal of radiology and nuclear medicine" and many Central journals of our country. He was awarded two state awards of the Russian Federation: in 1997 the medal "850 anniversary of Moscow", in 2006 the order of Friendship. In 2000, Bagrat Alekyan was awarded the silver medal. V. I. Burakovsky for outstanding achievements in the field of training of young specialists for cardiovascular surgery, in 2001-the Prize. V. I. Burakovsky with the presentation of the gold medal for outstanding achievements in the field of x-ray surgical treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In 2010 he was awarded the "Doctor of the year". In 2005, he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

With the active participation of Bagrat Alekyan, a new specialty "Endovascular diagnosis and treatment" was approved in the Russian Federation in 2009, and he was appointed chief freelance specialist of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation for endovascular diagnosis and treatment.

Bagrat Alekyan conducts a great pedagogical work, is a Professor of the Department of cardiovascular surgery № 2 Sechenov University.
